Monday June 19th, 2017 1:32pm Breaking News!
When we checked the eggs today, we clearly saw embryos moving in three out of the four eggs we are incubating
Quentz summer camp’s first week was from 6/12-6/16. Although it has only been one week, the students were able to learn a lot and enjoyed doing both indoor and outdoor activities. While it is in fact summer and they are on break, they are still able to continue to learn different skills, such as social skills by meeting new friends, Chinese skills through Chinese singing and cultural lessons, math skills through abacus and creativity skills, which includes building new things or even learning to raise chickens. We hope to continue our “learning by doing” method in order for the students to have memorable academic experiences!
Starting off with this summer’s main project, the chicken hatching project, the students met the school’s two chickens, Goldie and Smartie. They were able to pet the two chickens and noticed that they were very soft. There is also an egg incubator with eggs located in our classroom and the students are able to look at it everyday to check its progress. In class, they learned that chicken eggs must be put in a incubator with appropriate humidity and temperature levels in order for the embryo to develop. Furthermore, on Tuesday, they visited a chicken run and were able to feed the chicken’s favorite meals. They will continue to check on the eggs’ progress everyday and hopefully have baby chicks hatching in three weeks.
Throughout the whole week, the students played indoor games such as lego building, marble run building and sudoku in order to encourage their creative skills and thinking. For example, with legos, some built both vehicles and animals using various pieces. In addition, as for the Chinese cultural education and math skills, they received abacus lessons. They learned the abacus’s different components, and also learned how to count and place numbers on it. This song of the week was “大苹果” (Big Apple) and everyone learned how to sing it with the help of piano music. The plan is to have the students learn a new Chinese song every week and then by the end of the session perform seven songs total for parents.
Below are daily summaries of the week:
Monday: Refer to the first blog post.
Tuesday: Quesadillas were served for lunch. The kids went ice skating in the afternoon. Some of our students ice-skated before, but not everyone. This video (see on July 18th’s update) shows Alan, our first-time ice-skater, learned how to walk on ice by himself! It was a nice way to get out of the heat and do an indoor sport.
Wednesday: Roast beef sandwiches were served for lunch. Because it was nice and warm outside, the kids went swimming and had great water fun. On this day when the kids checked on the eggs, they saw what looks like an embryo developing in three out of the four eggs.
Thursday: Fried rice was served for lunch. We had tennis lessons in small groups. Students were divided into two different age groups (3-5, and 7-9). Two professional tennis coaches brought special equipment to teach our students. Most of our students were first time tennis players and they loved the lessons. This video ((see on July 18th’s update) shows our 4 year old student Cynthia learning how to control a tennis ball.
Friday: For Lunch, the kids had pizza and ice cream was given in the afternoon. In the morning, the kids went to the park in order to play badminton. They also played on the playground and had a lot of fun.
All lunch meals were provided with some fruits, vegetables and milk/water/ice tea. In addition, two snacks were provided each day, one in the mid-morning and another in the afternoon. This week’s snacks included goldfish, pretzels, Cheerios, baked chips along with a choice of milk or water.
This week, besides our regular sport activities, the students will be going on a field trip to the San Diego Museum of Man in balboa park.

The day has finally come! Quentz summer camp officially started yesterday and we are so excited to have the kids have a great enhancing learning experience this summer along with their development of social skills. We started off the day with ice breakers in order to allow the kids to get to know each other and feel comfortable around each other. They also went to the park where they played games together and had an amazing time!
Academically, the kids learned a Chinese tongue twister and participated in song singing. Furthermore, because this year in the lunar calendar is the year of the rooster, they started their chick hatching project in which they will be learning how to take care of the eggs including temperature requirements, humidity, time it takes for the eggs to hatch, etc. We hope to get active peeping chicks soon! At Quentz, we wish to have kids learn by doing and we will continue with many more engaging activities!
Today we will be going ice skating and having quesadillas for lunch and we will continue to do song singing and learn Chinese tongue twisters.
Reminders: Wednesday we will be going to swimming, please ensure that the kids bring appropriate attire and a change of clothes. Most importantly, sunscreen and water!
